Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship

Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians are responsible for planning, selecting, installing, servicing, commissioning, and maintaining all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Their work environment varies from customer homes to building sites, requiring excellent customer service skills, tidiness, and respect.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Installing and maintaining plumbing and heating systems, including accurate measuring, cutting, bending, and jointing of pipes.
  • Working with gas, pumps, heat emitters, bathroom furniture, controls, and more.
  • Leading to the installation of environmental technologies like heat pump and water recycling systems.
  • Ensuring systems and appliances are selected and installed correctly, safely, efficiently, and economically.

The Details

Duration: 40 months + 3 months End Point Assessment (EPA) available upon completion of all gateway units.

Cost: The apprenticeship is set at £22,000 with a £1100 + VAT employer contribution.

Employers employing an Apprentice aged 16-21 years old and employ less than 50 employees will receive full government funding and be exempt from paying the employer contribution.

Employers employing an Apprentice aged 16-18 years old will receive a £1,000 government incentive.

Classroom Delivery: You will attend one day a week. Delivery is in Plymouth.

On Programme Delivery

Functional Skills: Both maths and English are required at Level 2 or relevant GSCE results.

Registration: City and Guilds registration.

Qualification: Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Qualification.

  • Health & Safety in Gas utilisation.
  • Sanitation – including fluid category.
  • Drainage systems – above ground / below ground.
  • Cold water systems – type of distribution system.
  • Domestic hot water systems – including cylinders.
  • Legionnaires disease – how to prevent or control the risk.
  • WRAS – the water supply (water fittings) regulations 1999.
  • Pipe & fittings – types of pipe and types of fittings (jointing).
  • Radiators – types and installation.
  • Central heating design types – S plan & Y plan.
  • Rainwater harvesting.
  • Scientific principles in gas utilisation.
  • Combustion and properties of gas.
  • Buildings, services and structures.
  • Gas safety principles.
  • Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm diameter in small gas installation.
  • Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm diameter in small commercial premises.
  • The installation, commissioning and safety aspects of hot water systems for domestic use in accordance with UK building regulations.
  • Maintain gas water heaters and wet central heating.
  • End point assessment – knowledge test.

Assessment in the Workplace

Your designated Assessor/Trainer will visit you in the workplace to support the development of your on-programme portfolio.

Tracking Your Progress: Your onsite portfolio will need to be brought into the centre once a month to track your progress and advise on what further information may be required.

Classroom Tutor: Allocated member of curriculum team.

On site assessor: Pending on location.

Gateway: On completion of the on-programme learning, the employer, training provider and learner will confirm that the apprentice is ready for the End Point Assessment.
